The Projecting Revenues from Extractives for the Development and Investment in Communities (PREDIC) Tool Dataquest is an innovative event aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in the Philippine mining sector, particularly in Cebu and Palawan. Supported by USAID’s Powering a Just Energy Transition Green Minerals Challenge, and hosted by the Gov Data Initiative (GDI), the Dataquest focuses on engaging communities through the effective use of data.

 

Participants will leverage the PREDIC tool, a digital platform that visualizes production, government revenues, and social and environmental expenditures of mining companies, to craft compelling data stories. Two key workshops will take place: October 17, 2024, with students from the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) in Cebu, and October 30, 2024, with students from Palawan State University (PSU).

With the theme, “Empowering Communities: Navigating the Just Energy Transition Through Transparency and Innovative Use of Data,” the Dataquest emphasizes the role of transparency and data-driven governance in the growing energy transition minerals (ETMs) sector. Participants will use the PREDIC tool to analyze mining data, highlighting the importance of community participation in decision-making processes and advocating for equitable benefit distribution from mining activities.

The PREDICT Dataquest aims to:

• Encourage participants to delve into the functionalities and capabilities of the PREDICT tool, fostering a deeper comprehension of its uses in disclosing economic, social, and environmental data and facilitating informed decision-making within communities.

• Inspire participants to creatively use data visualization techniques to deliver compelling stories about mining activities and local communities, using insights derived from the PREDICT tool.

​

• Empower participants to engage with stakeholders, including local communities, government agencies, and mining companies, by effectively communicating the insights generated from the PREDICT tool, fostering dialogue, and driving collaborative decision-making processes.

​

• Encourage participants to explore innovative approaches to leverage the PREDICT tool's capabilities in addressing specific challenges faced by mining communities, thereby driving positive social and economic outcomes.

​

• Highlight the role of data storytelling in promoting transparency and accountability in the mining sector by showcasing how the PREDICT tool can empower communities to monitor mining revenues and advocate for fairer and more equitable distribution of benefits from mining.
