Workshop 3: Data Deep Dive: Real-World Applications of Data Analysis Tools in Mining

This session is a practical, hands-on workshop where participants will apply mining data analysis tools to create a simple infographic summarizing the social, environmental, and economic impacts of a mining company on a local community. The workshop focuses on helping participants develop skills in accessing and visualizing data for decision-making and communication.

By the end of this workshop, participants will design an infographic on the social, environmental, and economic impacts of Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation on mining communities.

Outline

  • Mechanics (10 minutes) Overview of the workshop instructions.

  • Group work (130 minutes) Participants will utilize the data tools presented and the datasets used in previous sessions to design a simple

  • Presentation of outputs and awarding of best infographic (10 minutes)

Mechanics

  • Step 1. Groups will explore the data tools introduced in previous sessions (e.g., MGB Database Portal, Philippine EITI EDGE, DISCLOSE) to gather relevant data about Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation.

  • Step 2. Each group will choose one of the following impact areas to focus on for their infographic:

    • Social Impact (e.g., health programs, education initiatives, employment).

    • Environmental Impact (e.g., pollution control, rehabilitation efforts, deforestation rates).

    • Economic Impact (e.g., revenue sharing, infrastructure development, local business growth).

  • Step 3. Using the tools and chosen impact area, groups will: Identify key data points for their chosen impact area. Focus on the most impactful or informative metrics, such as the number of beneficiaries for a social program, pollution levels, or revenue shared with the community.

  • Step 4. Groups will design a simple infographic using the data they have analyzed, ensuring it is clear and visually engaging.
